"Sharin was going to drive down with me for this one, but ended up not being able to go, so after a few calls to friends with cars, I decided to go it alone via Greyhound. It was probably cheaper that way anyhow with the cost of gas these days: $17 roundtrip.
I arrived during Tami's set and was told that Eric Nordby, the guy who had asked me to join the bill, wasn't himself going to be playing. The place was a coffee shop but it had a huge ballroom-sized performance area. I took the stage within twenty minutes of having stepped off that bus and, scanning the crowd for Eric, saw only a sea of teenage 'dudes' and their dyed-blonde girlfriends.
The sound was pretty bad, one of those occasions where the soundman was super-friendly and well-intentioned but we just couldn't get rid of the echo-ey loop problem between the monitor and the microphones. This only added to the emotional distance I felt with the young crowd.
Tyler followed me up with his John Mayer-inspired set of songs, and it made sense to me why that particular crowd was there. A nice guy in the crowd offered me a ride back to Portland and we left near the end of Tyler's set." -Jack |
