Thoughts:

"I had a conversation with my Dad before I performed where I tried to explain to him my inverse approach to playing to crowds of teenagers: where as a teenager I would have hated TOR's style of acoustic music, nowadays I play quiet music in part to bore teenage punk rockers.
This crowd was a curveball, though. Mostly under the age of 18, they had an open-minded enthusiasm, and though they weren't totally paying attention, they were dancing and having a good time, and most of them stayed standing throughout my set. I was told at the beginning that I'd only have 15 or 20 minutes to play—I guess the guy thought the crowd would tire of me in their desire for the electrified part of the evening—but I challenged this kindly from the stage, telling the crowd that I'd just keep playing until they told me to stop. They cheered. I made it through my usual eight songs with no contest.
The show was at an old cotton mill which had been abandoned for decades and is recently being used to house different artistic pursuits and businesses. We played outside on a large concrete platform; with all the stage lights and the gaping hole in the wall behind me, it felt like playing at the mouth of a cave. All in all it was an interesting experience, and while I didn't win over most of the kids, I did get a few of them—and certainly the parents who had come to watch one of the teenage bands play their very first show! It was a much more positive experience than the last time I played in Huntsville." -Jack
