[ back to the full catalog of lyrics ] Below are the lyrics to "the broken bannister," which appears on the second self-titled demo tape (RECDEL010): the broken bannister An aluminum frame on a porch swing holding a piece of Ledann's broken bannister, sitting still and resigned at a rusty hue: something less than you might expect from his dad. (As he's said, "He can fix things well.") And the man is a whiz with the solderinghe once taught young Ledann and he cautioned, "Hold it away from your eyes." You can hear the pedantry from the garage, the sounds of squealing girls and boys who will be firemen. Ledann's pursuing dentistry, or so he sayshe's got some years to go, as right now the boy is barely ten. Once, Ledann got his head stuck between the bars on the stairs. They removed him with margarine. Now he sits on the swing with the broken piece of the bannister in his hand as he wonders what substance might bind it back, sure his dad will know best how such things should go. Rusty coils at his side slightly creak-creak under the little boy's weight. If you surveyed the scenery, if you watched, you'd see the neighbor's dog chewing up a shoe. To Ledann it's all a mystery beyond that porch. He's big-eyed to the world: you watch the world, it watches you. Ooh, Dad'll know just what to do. Ooh, Dad'll have the perfect glue. Ooh, when Dad gets back from the hardware store, ooh, he'll watch closely how Dad does it.
